When we found our home at 120 Melvin Avenue there were so many things that we fell instantly in love with this house.  

First, it was the beautiful street and “Old Catonsville” neighborhood within walking distance from downtown Catonsville.  Second, the character and historic details found all over the house from the custom moldings to the beautiful floors.  Despite the age of the home, the rooms are huge which was also a big and welcome surprise. 

 Finally, it was clear from the first walk-through that all of the previous owners of the home cared for and maintained the property over the years.  It has been carefully updated and restored over the years. 

There are many things we love about our home.  

The property has so many cool and interesting spaces.  The side porch is a great place to have a cup of coffee and read a book.  The whole house including the huge backyard is wonderful for entertaining.  

The new multi-layer deck and patio with in ground lights and a fire pit are great for year round use. 

The walk out basement is a wonderful guest/in-law/nanny suite with its own entrance, bathroom, and kitchen!  

The basement is also a great place to end a busy day.  The garden is new and full of beautiful annuals, fruit trees, berry bushes, and a new garden bed waiting to overflow with home-grown veggies.  

UPDATE TO OUR HOME

We are proud to have contributed tothe care and maintenance of this great property.  

Since we moved here in 2011 we have:

-Finished the HUGE basement which doubled the size of the house

-Refinished the hardwood floors

-Added 4 walk-in closets

-Renovated the kitchen with granite countertops

-Built a deck and patio in the back yard

-Done lots of landscaping

-Many electrical updates including taking electricity to the backyard and garage

-Added a french drain and sump pump just to be safe (transferrable lifetime warranty included)

We are convinced that Melvin Ave. is the BEST street to live on in Catonsville! 

The neighbors are extremely kind, helpful, and fun to live near.  We love to attend the community parties, book clubs, and cookouts.  And the kids in the neighborhood range in age from new born to teenager so there are playmates and babysitters on the street! 

In addition, Melvin Avenue is part of the “Old Catonsville Neighborhood Association” which is very active and engaged with the town.  Our neighbors have great pride in the street and and take good care to maintain the beauty of the neighborhood.  

We moved to Baltimore County because of the historic neighborhoods, the proximity to Washington DC and Baltimore, the climate, the great schools, and public facilities, and the many job opportunities.

 

WE LOVE CATONSVILLE

 

Catonsville has been an extraordinary community to be a part of!  We love the local, small town feel but with close proximity to two major cities, DC and Baltimore.  We love the walkability (or jogability) of the town and the community engagement efforts. 

The free Friday night concerts downtown and the weekend concerts at the Lurman Amphitheater are super fun and convenient!  We love the parks, playgrounds, and public libraries.  All of the holiday events are memorable every year including Santa’s arrival into town, to the Firework display on the 4th of July.  The Arts and Crafts Festival is a must see as well as the multiple farmer’s markets that run throughout the year.  

We love all of the local restaurants!  Catonsville has some wonderful variety when it comes to dining out.  I really like that we can get pretty much any type of food we want without having to go more than a couple of miles away even if we are celebrating an event or just looking for a quick and delicious meal.  

The grocery stores we use are Aldi, Lotte Plaza, H-Mart, and Giant.  We also like that Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Costco are only a quick drive down the road.

 

WE LOVE OUR CATONSVILLE SCHOOLS

 

All of the schools in the area are great!  We love Hillcrest Elementary School, and are so pleased and proud of the effort of our neighbors who fought diligently to make sure that Melvin Avenue kids continue to go to Hillcrest.

When I first saw the house it made me want to go inside, because it gave me this feeling it would be the place I wanted to live in as we started our family. Once inside, the living room was spacious and there was plenty of natural light flooding the house. I also loved the flow from front to back. What we love about our home is the space for our kids! This is where my husband and I have raised our two children. There is plenty of space for them to play and spread out, including their bedrooms. I enjoy seeing my son go to his sister’s room so they can both play together. That might be one of my favorite things to watch! We really enjoy sitting on the patio in the sun with a glass of wine, while we plan future outings for our family. I think this might be when I’m most relaxed because I’m looking forward to things we’re going to do in the future.

UPDATES TO 211 WESTSHIRE •

We put in the brick patio and adding some gardens to the landscaping in the backyard. It is now the perfect spot to entertain friends, because they now can enjoy the porch or patio while we grilled food. We’ve spent many days playing cornhole or card games while enjoying the smell of teriyaki chicken or hamburgers.

• Power washed and sealed the front-side brick for a clean look

• New flooring in the family room. We put in a light wood color to add to our beach-themed colors

WE LOVE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

We always walk around our neighborhood and adjacent neighborhoods. My husband and I make it a point to keep the kids active and we’ll even walk to a local playground and the kids love it. It really makes me proud to know they enjoy being active outdoors. We’ve attended barbecues and birthday parties from neighboring friends, and the camaraderie doesn’t stop during the winter season. Every year our neighbors group together to help each other dig out from a snow storm. It’s the definition of be kind to your neighbor.

WE LOVE CATONSVILLE

Some of the things we love about living in Catonsville is the sense of community. There’s a yearly parade downtown, along with numerous festivals, one of which we attended down the road in Paradise. It’s always fun to go somewhere that has live music and good food to eat. The location is also centralized for us; we love going to Historic Ellicott City or downtown to the National Aquarium or an O’s game. We moved to Baltimore County because I grew up here. I love this area because of its sense of community and its location to everything, including great schools, library, festivals nearby and downtown, and even local ice cream shops, which includes one within walking distance. Catonsville has everything from great schools to restaurants to plenty of shopping. We are in the Westowne Elementary District and are getting a brand new school for 2016/2017.

RESTAURANTS

A few of our favorite restaurants in the area are Matthew’s 1600, Catonsville Gourmet, Taneytown, and Grilled Cheese & Co. The grocery stores we use are Giant and Shoppers. Both are only a few minutes away from our home.

We have loved living in this gorgeous and spacious home!   

The open concept and flow of the main level is great for family activities as well as entertaining.   The HUGE kitchen island and all that seating lets us enjoy our guests while still getting the cooking done.  The double oven has been one of my FAVORITE things about this kitchen!!  Being able to cook 2 items at one time is the best thing ever!

We love that the laundry room is on the upper level with the bedrooms – it’s so convenient and seriously make it really easy to do laundry – which is never a chore anyone enjoys!

We really have so much storage space here and LOVE having 2 walk in closets in the Master Bedroom.  No more fighting over closet space for us!

The schools have been great and are really close which makes it possible to play up there on the weekends when we want.  Atholton High School is one of the best schools in Howard County!

It has been great to be so close to Fort Meade where we work and all the activities and culture in Columbia, Baltimore and DC are just a short ride away!

We love grocery shopping at Harris Teeter, Wegman’s and Trader Joe’s.  We are close to Maple Lawn and its great restaurants.   Columbia is close by and also literally has every kind of restaurant you can imagine.  Some of our favorites are Mission BBQ for a quick meal, On the Border for great Mexican and Victoria’s Bistro for an adult night out!

WE LOVE OUR COMMUNITY

The Autumn Walk community is really well maintained and they do a great job with information and updates.  We love using the Tennis Courts and the Pool in the summertime!
