What we love about 2003 Westchester Avenue in Catonsville!
When we found our home at 2003 Westchester Ave, we loved the huge rooms, the fact that there are lots of windows that provide fantastic natural light throughout the home.
What makes our home special!
There is a lot of space to spread out,our kids can romp around without being in the way. Entertaining is easy; weve had parties with forty people that didnt make the home feel cramped or overcrowded. We can even fit a nice big Christmas tree in
our living room to celebrate the holidays! We also love that our home now has a more modern interior than most homes in Catonsville. Our home has refinished floors throughout, we love the hardwood. Our new kitchen counter is a real pleasure too. We love to grow veggies in our fenced-in area at the side of our house, where we also keep a paddling pool and grill in the spring and summer. We love that our backyard leads to an open grassy area where the neighborhood children play. It is also a great place to catch lightning bugs on a summer evening and take a sled on a snowy day. We love seeing the occasional rabbits and deer, and seeing
an owl or woodpecker.
What upgrades & renovations have you completed in the house since you have lived here?
We have been working hard to upgrade our home. Everything we did was done with the intention of making our lives here – this is our home and we never would have imagined wed be moving so soon. This is mentioned so that you will know we were not trying to do the minimum necessary to flip the property. Everything was done with attention to detail and quality. We pulled all the carpets on the main two
levels and found hardwood beneath. We had the hardwood restored and put new high-quality carpets in a few rooms and a matching runner on the stairs.
We knocked out part of a wall on the main floor and replaced it with French Doors
so that even more light could come through and to make all parts of the main floor more accessible. We completely gutted and renovated the downstairs half bath and main upstairs bathroom, including new floors, toilets, sinks, and fixtures. We installed a new cabinet and replaced the sink in the en suite bathroom. We
replaced interior light fixtures throughout the house. We put a new tile floor in the kitchen, completely refurbished the cabinetry, and added a beautiful modern countertop, a new fan, and a new dishwasher and oven.
We put new baseboards in many rooms and reframed all the windows in the home with solid wood frames. We added new windows to the sides of the home. We installed the front gate and refinished the wood fence, and repaired exterior water lines. We replaced the old mediocre sump pump with a high quality sump pump. We added washer and dryer hookups to the basement . We painted throughout the home. We installed new plugs, switches, and wall plates throughout the home.
What are your average utility costs?
Our BGE data show that we are categorized as “efficient neighbors” and we egularly beat even our efficient neighbors in terms of low energy consumption. In the spring and fall our BGE bill averages about $100. In the summer its about $160. In the winter its about $290. Water bills come quarterly from the county and average about $30 (i.e., $10 per month). We also have a whole-home surge protector from BGE Home that costs less than $9 per month.
Any great schools to mention?
Fantastic schools! Westchester Elementary and Westchester Middle schools are as good as any in the county. We couldnt be happier on this count. Its a treasure and one of the great values of living here in Catonsville!
What great things does your neighborhood have to offer?
In Westchester our neighborhood is great for just about everything. There are many families with young children, and the kids are really nice and welcoming. There are neighborhood happy hour Friday gatherings. Theres a Westchester community Facebook page for getting people together and keeping in the loop on whats going on in the neighborhood. It couldnt be easier to make friends here. This is a quiet yet vibrant neighborhood with so much to do. There is a fantastic path called the “Trolley Trail” that begins just a few blocks from our home and extends all the way to historic Ellicott City with its plentiful dining and shopping on a quaint European style high street.
Walk the other way a similar distance and you are at a trail head for Patapsco State Park and miles of trails. “The Breadery” is an artisanal bread and wine shop that is right down the street. J.W. Treuth & Sons is a real old school butchers that is next to the Breadery and offers the freshest ground beef you will find in the altimore/DC area. The Westchester Community center is a stones throw away and offers not only the best child care and preschool in the area for your little ones but also serves as the home to many community events and gatherings including yoga classes, dancing, youth sports leagues and more. The Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum is right here too and offers summer jazz concerts and an annual colonial market fair that is a lot of fun. All of this is walkable from our home.
What do you love about the town your home is in?
We love living in Catonsville. The best thing about it is the people and the sense of community. Most of Catonsville is really pretty and there are lots of trees in the neighborhoods. Theres a regionally renowned Fourth of July parade and fireworks display, a free summer concert series at Lurman Woodland Theater, and monthly acoustic jam sessions at Appalachian Bluegrass (the Baltimore areas best acoustic instrument store). Catonsville co-op is a wonderful co-operative preschool that is a great way to meet other parents of young children. Theres a great tire park that is in the Hilton area of Patapsco State Park that has a huge playground made
of old truck tires and camping cabins for rent.
Route 40 has all the standard big box stores, and Frederick Rd. has plenty of more unique offerings including a great bike shop, a full service music store, a specialty pet supply store and much more. Its also very easy to get to other places in the Baltimore City area…driving to the Inner Harbor takes only about 20 minutes, Columbia is 20 minutes away, Ellicot City is 10 minutes away.
My favorite restaurants around this home!
Some of our favorite restaurants in the area are Indian Delight, a nice place to grab some tandoori, and Hunan Taste, an authentic Chinese restaurant that accommodates the adventurous and conservative alike. The Pure Wine Café in Ellicott City only takes a minute to get to and is our favorite for a romantic night out. Atwaters is a great coffee and sandwich shop that is a refreshing alternative to Starbucks.
Between Scittinos and Piece a pizza, you will find a local pizza shop that suits your taste and will keep you from resorting to the corporate joints. The DoubleT Diner is a blast from the past and its always packed for a reason. Honestly this place is packed with restaurants…French, Korean, Lebanese, Mexican, theres even a place that specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches.
Grocery stores that we shop!
The Grocery store we use most is the Giant on Route 40, which is very convenient and has most of whats needed on a day-to-day basis. The H-Mart across the street has better produce and fish, and some harder to find ethnic food products. For the big trips its worth the 20 minute ride to get over
to Whole Foods and/or Wegmans in Columbia. They are both phenomenal grocery stores.
Why people should move to this area; why were we attracted?
We moved to Baltimore County for a job opportunity in the city. We couldnt have predicted how much wed love the Baltimore area. Weve become huge Orioles fans and love our time at Camden Yards. Were aquarium members and its worth every penny. We always make a point to see one or two performances of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at the Myerhoff each season. Ft. McHenry, the art museums, the zoo…theres never a lack of things to do. Patapsco State Park and Gunpowder State Park are real treasures. For weekend getaways the possibilities are outstanding. Washington DC and
Philadelphia can be done as day trips or as part of one or two night stays. NYC is great for a 3-day getaway. Rehoboth Beach and Fenwick Island are grea
t Delaware beach destinations. Annapolis is an easy as a day trip and is gorgeous. If you like rolling hills and mountains then heading west to Harpers
Ferry, Antietam National Battlefield and Berkeley Springs WV are all great places to spend a 3-day weekend or could be done together on a week off. In
the fall there are a lot of nearby farms that offer festivals and pick-your-own pumpkin patches.
