Columbia has a lot of grocery options!  We like to go to Wegman’s and Trader Joe’s which are both less than 5 minutes from our house.  Whole Foods recently opened near the Columbia Mall as well.

For shopping, the Columbia Mall has every store you can imagine from large department stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom’s to small boutiques that have been there for decades and everything in between.  There is always plenty of parking and the mall is just minutes from us. 

 

The mall has expanded in the past few years and hasa movie theatre and lots of dining options as well.

We first fell in love with our home after driving through Turf Valley Overlook.  The homes look as if they appear out of a story book…with kids running and playing.  Our home was situated perfectly for our needs; from the fenced in backyard to the school bus stop location. 

The home itself was exactly what we were looking for; from the master bedroom with access to one of the bedrooms (great for a nursery) and the other bedrooms situated on the other side of the home…this home is the perfect family home!

What we love about our home is the sun porch!  We spend at least three nights a week dining in this room; during the fall months, we can watch the sun set while dining…an experience we will miss.

Our house is located on a tree-lined street in a charming neighborhood surrounded by wonderful neighbors and families with lots of school-age children.  Also the schools are amazing – our kids have been very happy there!

We love sitting at our kitchen table or in our sun porch enjoying the view of the backyard!

Our average utility costs are better than the neighborhood’s average; per BG&E’s monthly status update.  Our home features a heat pump and air handler that were just serviced earlier this year…keeping costs to a minimum.

THE HOME

When we found our home at 4655 Briarclift Road, there were several things we loved about it.  The backyard with the patio, trees and yard were very appealing.  We also loved the hardwood floors throughout the home and the two car garage accessed via alley.           

We love sitting on the back patio with the fire pit. We love the outdoors so it was important for us to have a place to relax and unwind outside and the patio offers us just that.          

We have made many updates to the home since we bought it in 2002.  Some of these include: new kitchens, new bathrooms, new electric, updated sunroom with more windows, floors refinished, new doors, new gutters, electric garage doors, new landscaping, new water line, central air, and new roofs (non-slate portions).  Additionally, we have regular roof maintenance – two times per year, a security system, and have our heating and cooling system regularly maintained by contract.  As I look at our list of improvements – there isn’t much we haven’t done since we bought it.

Our utility costs are below average.  BGE and Baltimore City are our providers, along with Comcast for our cable and internet.  

THE NEIGHBORHOOD   

Our neighborhood has the best people!  You will meet many as you walk or run the neighborhood.  Everyone is friendly and wanting to meet others.  Dogs are plentiful – and there are trails outside our door to head down to Gwynn Falls – Leakin Park. There is an annual neighborhood party and community yard sale along with other activities to engage with neighbors.            

I love that the neighborhood is close to so many other great spots in the Baltimore region – downtown, Ellicott City, Hampden, the zoo, Catonsville and Columbia.  It is also really close to BWI and the trains that run to DC. We moved into this neighborhood as we were looking for a convenient place from which we could access these great locations. We also wanted to offer space to our dog with close proximity to parks (Patapsco is close and Leakin Park is within walking distance) so that she could spend time outside with us.

We love that there is a variety of restaurants in the area.  We love grabbing pizza from Scittinos in Catonsville or Pho from one of the three Vietnamese restaurants.  Additionally, there are so many great dining options within a short drive –  Indian, Catonsville Gourmet, Hampden restaurants, and historic Ellicott City restaurants.              

We go to the Giant in Catonsville, Trader Joe’s in Elkridge and Target in Ellicott City.  There are also several Asian grocery stores in Catonsville offering diverse options and great produce.  It’s also a quick drive to the seasonal Baltimore Farmers Market.                          

 

Our neighborhood takes pride in its heritage and its upkeep.  There is an active homeowner’s association (voluntary).  The neighborhood is diligent in keeping the neighborhood safe through its relationship and meetings with the local police precinct, active neighbor email communications, and citizens on patrol (neighborhood watch).  Also- there are some local public figures that live in the neighborhood that elevate the neighborhood’s resources – police patrol, snow removal, etc.

We loved our house from the moment we stepped onto the porch and saw the swing. From the border in the flooring to the stained glass windows – we adore the little details in the house.  

Our street is fantastic – lots of different people, from retirees to younger families. It’s been wonderful to be able to walk my kids to school – from pre-school through 5th grade – and walk or bike over to Opies for ice cream or Atwaters for coffee.

Most of what’s in Catonsville is within walking distance from our house – the farmer’s market, Opie’s, Atwaters, Hillcrest Elementary, the Catonsville Library etc.

I moved to Catonsville for good schools in a town close enough to Baltimore City to go in for restaurants, music, and culture that has character and charm.    

The schools are great, the main street is getting new stuff all the time, Patapsco State Park is right down the road, and anything you don’t find here isn’t too far away.

Some of our favorite restaurants in Catonsville are Atwaters, Linsy’s Hispanic Store, Paradise Thai, and Sushi Q.  For groceries, we usually go to the Catonsville Giant or the Wegmans in Columbia.  Aldi’s is right down the street as well as several Korean grocery stores that have every type of produce you can imagine.

When we first saw our home, we loved its large rooms, hardwood floors and gorgeous yard!  The location is amazing – Jackson Pond has a playground, fishing and trails and is less than a 2 minute walk from us.

GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD

We have loved living in Long Reach, the neighborhood is very friendly with young families starting to move in for the great location and variety of home styles here.    Our kids loved growing up in Columbia and the schools are great.  Howard High School is a 5 star school!  We also love how easy it is to get onto main roads like 95 and 29 to get to work or places like Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, DC.

FAVORITE RESTAURANTS & SHOPS

Some restaurants we like are Clyde’s at the Lakefront in Columbia, PF Chang’s for Chinese Food and we love Eggspections for brunch.

Columbia has a lot of grocery options!  We like to go to Wegman’s and Trader Joe’s which are both less than 5 minutes from our house.  Whole Foods recently opened near the Columbia Mall as well.

For shopping, the Columbia Mall has every store you can imagine from large department stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom’s to small boutiques that have been there for decades and everything in between.  There is always plenty of parking and the mall is just minutes from us. 

 

The mall has expanded in the past few years and hasa movie theatre and lots of dining options as well.
