What first attracted you to your home?
The Grovemont development is completely surrounded by State Park, County Park and private school property. We knew that this would always be a beautiful place to live. Our lot is central to the development and although a corner it feels very protected. The eastern Howard County location was a big draw for us for access to services and work.
What do you love about your home?
The plan is a great balance between openness and comfortable separate spaces. The stone front and matching fireplace stand out in a neighborhood of brick homes. We have plenty of space but the house does not feel too big. We like being on county water and a natural gas line. Like any home, the kitchen is the focal point for us and is great for cooking, family and entertaining. The walk out basement adds tons of usable space. Five bedrooms means we could have a parent live with us comfortably as well as have room to care for our handicapped child.
What upgrades & renovations have you completed in the house since you have lived here.
We installed extensive landscaping, hardscape, sprinklers and fencing early to create a very private back yard. Our finished basement is our family’s favorite part of the house for media and games, plus it includes another bath and a workout room. The kitchen appliances were upgraded in 2009. Gutters and downspouts have been replaced and expanded. Exterior wood trim has been covered in no-maintenance sheathing. The rear deck is handicapped accessible.
If you are in a neighborhood, what great things do you do there?
Over the past 15 years Grovemont has matured into a great community with plenty of opportunity to interact with neighbors. Perhaps our most significant advantage is our walking access to Patapsco State Park and Rockburn Branch County Park for hiking, sports, and mountain biking.
What do you love about the town your home is in?
We have all the Howard County advantages but are not constrained by Columbia Association requirements. The Grovemont HOA strikes a great balance between keeping the community beautiful and allowing people the freedom to improve their homes and property the way they want. We have local police and firefighters who live in the neighborhood as well as business owners and other professionals including many government employees. It is a responsible group. Most households have school age children and our kids have easily made friends.

Three great ones close at the Lynwood shopping center (artisan pizza, sushi and Tex-Mex) plus everything in old Ellicott City. For a special night we have the Elkridge Furnace Inn, whose owners live across the street from us.

Our independent Green Valley market two miles away has the best produce and reasonable prices on groceries. Giant is also close. We are convenient to anything on the Route 1 corridor and an easy back roads drive to old Ellicott City or Route 40. Long Gate Shopping Center, Gateway Overlook, Snowden River Parkway stores, Arundel Mills and even the Columbia Mall are all short trips.
Why people should move to this area?
The location is super convenient to everything. It is a quiet area free of congestion and airport noise, but a very quick drive to downtown Baltimore. It is easy access to the major roads (I-95, MD 100, US 29, BW Parkway) and even the MARC train for commuting.
Any great schools or other things to mention?
The schools are some of the best rated in the county and the state. Rockburn Elementary was great for our boys. Grovemont has been redistricted to Elkridge Landing Middle School since our kids attended Howard County schools, but we hear good things from other parents in the neighborhood. The Elkridge Branch of the Howard County Library is a great resource. The county’s public golf course, Timbers at Troy, is three miles way.
