What we Love About Our Home / 317 Harlem Lane, Catonsville, MD

We have a long history with this house. Our family has lived here for more than 50 years and we have made extensive updates and improvements over that time!

Our first thought when we moved in was what a great house, spacious porch and flat yard! What we love about this house is its character, open space and large rooms. The uniqueness of the loft space makes it one of my favorite features. The large family room overlooking the back yard has hosted birthday parties, showers and the annual family Christmas Eve celebrations for generations. The yard has seen Easter eggs hunts, family gatherings and several weddings. The front porch has served as the hub for sharing family stories and a gathering spot for neighbors and friends.

The Neighborhood

We moved to Catonsville because my husband and I enjoyed growing up here and we wanted our children to have the same experience. We love the location and the easy access to anywhere we want to go. We have been extremely happy with the local schools, Westowne Elementary and Catonsville Middle and High Schools.

Updates to Our House

Updates to our home include major kitchen updates in 2011, a completely remodeled bathroom on the bedroom level in 2012 and full bathroom expansion on main level in 2011, updates to the large shed, new lights and ceiling fans on the main floor in 2013 and extensive landscaping and a new roof in 2007. Utility costs were cut drastically after the outside lights and new Simonton Windows were installed. Our Baltimore Gas and Electric bills average $190 a month. The quarterly Baltimore City water bill is $15 a month. The storm doors were replaced within the last 3 years. A new furnace & water heater (updated 2008), backup (water-driven) sump pump, electric sump pump (updated 2014), new lighting, and electrical panel were installed in the cellar. The cellar walls were painted with DryLock 3 years ago. Also the carport was installed to accommodate the boat in 2009 but can be raised to accommodate a car.

Life in Catonsville

Our children grew up knowing most of the same neighbors I knew as a child. Neighbors here were like family and watch out for each others kids and homes. My husband found the commute from 317 Harlem to be ideal no matter where his job put him. We have easy access to city venues without the congestion and higher taxes and water bills. Seems like it’s just a 20 minute drive to any entertainment or mall venue in Towson, Columbia, Arundel Mills and the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

As they say…..”Life is great in 21228″ here in Catonsville! The annual 4th of July parade fireworks, Art Scape, Frederick Road Friday night free concerts on Frederick Road, and the Lurman Theater Summer Concert series are always fun family events. Ellicott City reflects old time main street USA and offers some outstanding dining opportunities. The two Farmer’s Markets in Catonsville are great shopping destinations.

Our favorite restaurant in walking distance is the Grill Cheese Company (amazing crab grilled cheese). We have a wonderful variety of restaurants within a few miles. These include Deusenberg’s (great German dinners), Catonsville Gourmet, Franco’s, and Chef Paolino’s. These are just a few of the choices Catonsville has to offer. The Asian Market (HMart) on Rolling Road has the best and largest variety of fresh produce and seafood. The Giant across the street carries all the hard to find items needed for those exotic recipes. Safeway offer the convenience of being within walking distance along with CVS, Rite Aide, Walgreens, Chick Fil A and Dunkin Donuts.

Westowne Elementary has always had an outstanding teaching staff and will soon have a brand new air conditioned building. Catonsville Middle and High School place higher than those in neighboring counties. The Catonsville Library spans all ages and offers an excellent Summer Reading Program for children, electronic media, books and special events for all ages.

What we love about our home!

When we found our home at 5615 Roundtree Lane we knew it would be a great place to raise our family! We loved how spacious it was including large sized bedrooms, great storage and a big level back yard for our children and their friends to play in.

The smaller neighborhood was perfect for getting to know our neighbors and to take nice walks on long evenings. Riding bikes on the streets is a pleasure. We have a really lovely community feel that we will miss. It also has plenty of parking spaces with a two car garage and additional street parking for guests.

Since we have lived here we have been thrilled with all the new developments that have happened in the area. Columbia Crossings is so convenient and offers many retail options including Target, Old Navy, Dicks Sporting Goods, Toys R Us and many more. Wegmans is a delight to shop at and we also frequent Trader Joes and Cosco. Blandair Park is the newest addition to the Howard County Parks and its just a short ride away. Our perfect location affords us a quick commute to Baltimore, Washington or Fort Meade and a quick journey to BWI too.

What we love about our home is enjoying all the natural light that streams in through the many windows and spending so much time out on the beautiful and large screened porch. We also love cozying up to the warm wood burning fireplace in the colder months. We really like that the bedrooms are all on the same level and the cozy basement is great for family movie time! The open floor plan provides the opportunity to be with family and friends on the main level and is a great space for entertaining.

The house has many improvements including a fenced in level back yard, a new HVAC unit, wood floors, granite countertops, a partially finished basement, large screened porch, new sump pump with battery back up, updated kitchen appliances, new carpeting, fresh paint, new garage door, ceiling fans and new top quality Thompson Creek windows.

We use Baltimore Gas & Electric and our utility costs are very good averaging between $200-250 per month. Our new gas-insulated windows help keep the costs down. We are on public water.

Our neighborhood Longridge Knolls is great for conversing with friendly people, yearly cul-de-sac get-togethers and walk-abouts. It is also convenient to many bike and walking paths in the area.

Some of the things we love about living in Columbia are the excellent schools, the diverse community, the convenience to shopping, parks, restaurants, libraries and top notch medical care including Howard County General Hospital and many urgent care centers. We also love the multitude of programs available for all ages including theater, sports, concerts and educational classes including those at Howard Community College.

Some of our favorite restaurants in the area are T-Bonz, a friendly and cozy pub, LeeLynn’s on 108 for great crab cakes, Eggspectations for brunch and Pasta Blitz for Italian dishes and pizza. Other convenient restaurants provide a variety of food choices including Indian, French, Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine. The grocery store we use the most is the Giant on Centre Park Drive. It is less than five minutes away and has most everything we need. We also like to shop at the new Wegmans which has an abundance of wonderful items and a cafe. There is also a Whole Foods nearby as well as Safeway and Food Lion.

We moved to Howard County because it is near two major cities which provides many good employment opportunities. It is also close enough to the beach/mountains for vacations and the schools are top notch. We enjoy the many amenities and activities that this county provides. It truly is a wonderful place to live!

What attracted us to our home

This was a “Love at first sight” moment for us when we first pulled up to 1920 Lismore Lane in the lovely area of Catonsville. We had been looking for a while and nothing had excited us like this home did. It checked all of our “Must Have” boxes. There where kids playing in the streets and neighbors waved to us – we knew we wanted to raise our family here too.

The spacious rooms, the big windows and the separation of the bedroom space and the living space, the driveway and the terrific back yard just spoke to us as we took our first tour.

What we love about our home now

All of the features that we loved about the house from the start we still love, but we have enhanced them even more. Our biggest major project was the completely refinished basement in 2014! We carefully designed the ultimate space to incorporate function, storage and comfort. When we host dinner parties (which we loved to do a lot with our neighbors and friends), the kids can play downstairs while the adults enjoy our time on the main floor. It has worked out so well! I love that our backyard is so open and backs up to the woods – the kids spend hours back there. We also appreciate that our bedrooms are in the back of the house which allows for privacy and quiet! Our home gets incredible natural light throughout the day – the side of the street where we live stays bright and warm. We are so lucky to have our back sunroom which we use for dinners in the warm weather and to watch the kids play. I didnt know how much I would like have a separate side entrance – but it keeps the front room from getting messy and cluttered! We also like having our storage room in the back which lets us stash seasonal and work items way from the rest of the house!

We are so sad to leave our beautiful and cherished first home. Our family of almost 6 needs a little bit more room, but there will be tears when we go.

Updates

Completely renovated basement with wainscoting and gas fireplace, customized built-in bookshelves and desk area with lots of storage. New roof in 2008, all new windows, storm doors and gutters. Refinished hardwood floors. New paint in all rooms. New closet doors in main floor. New toilets, sinks, mirrors and hardware in both full bathrooms.

Living in Catonsville

Catonsville is amazing for its small town feel combined with close proximity to state parks and trails, major highways, the city and BWI airport. You will quickly get to know people all over town from the many events held in Catonsville throughout the year. There are the Strawberry Fields Family Festivals, Frederick Road Fridays concerts, several farmers markets, Santas arrival and tree lighting, and of course the annual 4th of July Parade and festivities!

Our kids are involved in the local recreation and sports programs and we have made many good friends while watching soccer and lacrosse games in Catonsville!

Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is just amazing! It’s a great feeling to have the peace of mind that you are surrounded by good people!

Everyone knows each other and watches out for one anothers children and homes. We could not have asked for a better neighborhood and community which is the kind of thing you can never be sure of when you buy a home! Every year we have a HUGE block party that all the families look forward too. People wheel out their grills and cook together and there are so many games for the children. Its an awesome neighborhood. We love our local playground on Devere, it’s walkable and has been perfect for our kids through each stage and age. There are even some streams and little trails to explore right in our neighborhood.

Restaurants

Catonsville is ALIVE with GREAT restaurants. Catonsville Gourmet is our all-time favorite sit down restaurant! The seafood is so fresh and the atmosphere is really inviting. We love Atwaters on Frederick Road for coffee and lunch and Taney Town Deli has amazing sandwiches! You cant beat crabs at The Ships Café and Mathews 1600 has the best happy hour in town.

Schools

We cannot say enough about our experience with the teachers and facilities at Westchester Elementary School! It is less than a mile away and we use the fields for weekend recreation as well. Our friends have children at Catonsville Middle and Catonsville High School which are both very well regarded and academically challenging.

BGE Costs

Our BGE costs run from about $100 in the summer to around $250 over the colder months. We noticed that our bills were reduced when we put in the new windows.
